Your Guide to the Perfect Pre-Vacation Skin Prep

Dreaming of white sands, turquoise waters, and that blissful island sun? Grand Cayman offers everything you could want in a tropical paradise. But before you zip up your suitcase and set off for Seven Mile Beach, it’s important to take a little time to prep your skin. Tropical climates are beautiful, but they can also be tough on unprepared skin.

At La Mer Spa, we see countless travellers throughout their vacation as they enjoy our range of spa services. Whether you want a massage to unwind at the beginning of your trip or a facial to soothe your skin after its time in the sun, our treatments are an essential part of any journey.

We’ve created this guide to the perfect pre-vacation skin prep before your trip to Grand Cayman, helping you ensure your skin is protected and ready to get glowing. If you have any questions about our services, don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Exfoliate Before Flying

In the week leading up to your trip, gently exfoliate your skin two to three times to slough off dead skin cells and promote a smoother, more even texture. This helps your skin better absorb moisturisers and sunscreen, and will help your natural tan look flawless. Choose a gentle exfoliant with ingredients like sugar, fruit enzymes, or lactic acid to avoid irritation before your flight. However, don’t exfoliate the day before or the day of flying — aeroplane air is drying, and freshly exfoliated skin can feel extra sensitive.

Hydrate for Your Grand Cayman Vacation

Tropical air may feel humid, but your skin needs plenty of hydration in Grand Cayman. Between flights, time in the sun, and swimming in the sea, your skin will dry up quickly. It’s vital not only to hydrate during your vacation, but also beforehand. In the days leading up to your Grand Cayman getaway, increase your water intake and opt for a nourishing moisturiser with hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, or ceramides.

Get a Tan Pre-Vacation

If you love the sun-kissed look but don’t want to risk your skin health on your Grand Cayman vacation, consider a spray tan or using at-home self-tanner a few days before your departure. That way, you’ll arrive in Grand Cayman glowing, without exposing your skin to intense UV rays right away.

If you’re going the self-tanning route, exfoliate and moisturise well before application for an even finish. And don’t forget to use sunscreen — you will still need protection!

Schedule Hair Removal Before Travelling

If you’re waxing or sugaring, aim to book your appointment at least 48 hours before your flight to allow your skin to calm down and reduce the risk of irritation. The last thing you want is inflamed skin while sunbathing or swimming in saltwater!

Should you want to laser your hair before your vacation, make sure you book your appointment at least two weeks in advance. Sun exposure after laser can increase the risk of burns and hyperpigmentation. It can also reduce the efficacy of future laser treatments. Give your skin as much time to heal as possible.

Start Using SPF Pre-Vacation

Start incorporating SPF into your routine at least a week before your trip, even if you’re not spending much time outdoors. This protects against incidental sun exposure and preps your skin to handle the stronger sun in Grand Cayman. Once you’re on the island, apply generously every morning and reapply every two hours and after swimming. Make sure to use SPF 30 and above for the most effective protection. Remember to also choose a reef-safe sunscreen to help protect Grand Cayman’s stunning coral reefs!
